A season of Listening Arts workshops and events in Dover, UK, in Summer 2023.
We engage different communities in Dover and the surroundings in the themes of:

Early Years Listeners, Listening to Ourselves, Listening Spaces, Cultures of Listening.

A 15min narrative music piece by residents of Dover who, led by Alice Phelps, have created a sound poem about the river Dour that runs through Dover.

"I was really pleased to be part of the second workshop. It was an amazing day with many fantastic memories and it is hugely rewarding to hear our piece (both sides of the river) produced up and heard on Dover Community Radio.Alice Katherine Phelps was amazing at bringing us all together and creating something we really didn't expect to happen at the outset.  ‘Poetry can communicate before it is understood’ - T.S Eliot --------------

A 15 min radio/music piece including a specially created poem by the participants, with words and songs in Pidgin, Yoruba, Albanian, Urdu, Hindi.

 The sound poem has been created by participants following poem generation techniques that use the deep listening of nature to uncover feelings, emotions and narratives.  A collaborative Project with 7 female  participants who are survivors of modern slavery and trafficking.

Created by participants of the Sound Film workshop, this track represents the story of a small group that has been caught in the Rye Castle grounds. the farmers and their sheep clamped their car and managed to place them in an MRI machine disguised as a sunbed proceeded to produce from them a kind of spam which they sold locally. The survivors fled for the sea, we dont know what became of them.

Mixed by Joel Cahen and played at Wet Sounds Dover.

GONG BATH

Eclipse Yoga Centre For Wellbeing, Waterloo Crescent, Dover

A meditational listening sessions using gongs and bowls. Andre conducts a sound session intended for deep listening.

Tune in to the subtle vibrations of the gongs as they resound in the room and create an enveloping nurturing experience. Lie back, relax.

SOUNDHOPPERS

St. Radigunds Community Centre, Poulton Close, Dover CT17 0HL, UK

Aimed at children between the ages of 5 and 11, and developed by sound artists, the workshop removes exploratory barriers and allows children to engage with sound freely and playfully. Attendees are encouraged to adopt a sense of careful listening and sonic curiosity through numerous listening activities.

Children are also given access to bespoke soundboxes, transducers and other sound-generating devices and materials, allowing them to explore how sound travels through materials and objects.

LUMINOUS PROCURESS SOUND SWAP

Live soundtrack to queer cinema cult classic LUMINOUS PROCURESS (1971) directed by Steve Arnold, a film that displayed camp glamour and transgender opulence ahead of its time and appraised by Salvador Dali and Andy Warhol when it was released.

The live soundtrack is by UKAEA and participants of the Build a Synth workshop. The film has been edited to suit all audiences.

SOUND MASSAGE

Market Square, Dover

ASMR is the practice of moving sound around a listeners head. Like a microscopic experience of sound, you listen to close up sonic textures combined with movement around your head. It is a unique experience to have in a public space.

In pop-up locations near Market Square you are invited for a Sound Massage, sit, close your eyes and be sonically transported for 4min.
